About Us

Hi! Our names are Rich & Polly Blackstock and we are the directors of Academic Associates Reading House located in South Broken Arrow. We thought we would let you know a little about ourselves so that you will feel more comfortable in our meeting.

This is our home in Indian Springs where the Reading Clinic is located.

Academic Associates Reading Clinic

I graduated from Rochester Institute of Techonology, in Rochester New York, with a graphic arts degree in 1975. Part of my past experience includes working with a sculptor constructing Old West street scenes, designing needlepoint designs for manufacturers, and a partnership with five others in a graphic design studio in Colorado.

During this time I started getting "antsy" in my desire to work for myself. I grew up in a home with a father who was able to stay at home and work as a cartoonist. I always knew that I wanted to work from home, just like my Dad, so I could be with my family. (BTW... in case you're interested, my Dad is the creator of Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois).

So... I ventured out on my own and established a stained glass "commission-only" business. At one point I was even featured on TV for one of my projects. WooHoo!

I then moved to Oklahoma where I was offered a job working with Tulsa English Institute. This involved finding homestay placements for international students who were learning English as a Second Language and chaperoning them in a wide variety of activities. For the next several years I hosted over 60 of those students,of all different ages, for short stays in our home. What an experience that was!

A few years later I started foster parenting and had 23 children who came through our home. Most of those children were in pre-school or the early elementary grades. Needless to say our household was always very lively.

One year I bought a franchise, CompuChild, which involved teaching computer to preschoolers. This ended up being a great success and a lot of fun. I had about 5 teachers working for me. When the schools implemented their preschool programs a lot of the centers lost their children which resulted in my program phasing out.

I was extremely fortunate that I was able to stay at home with my son and homeschool him during this time. I did this until he was in 8th grade when he expressed a desire to go to a 'real' school. I am so grateful for the wonderful experiences we had while he was growing up.

I love children and really see the need for this kind of program. There is not another one like it located in Oklahoma. With the opportunity in teaching a child to read comes the ability to really being able to alter the course of that child's life.
