learn:

To learn written words by mastering all the sounds of
each letter and combination of letters in the alphabet.
-
To recognize and use the rules of phonics to decode
words correctly.
-
To blend the sounds of the letters to pronounce words,
and to combine words into sentences.
-
To master word-attack skills at a level at least
appropriate to, and often exceeding, their current school grade level.
-
To read standardized material proficiently and
fluently on their appropriate grade level, and to score at least within the normal range for
comprehension of that material.
Evaluation
Materials and Criteria
- The WRAT® (Wide Range Achievement Test ®) is used to assess students'
word-attack skill levels both prior to and after the course. Different versions of the test are used in pre and
post-evalutaive exercises. The WRAT® are specifically
excluded during instruction in the Academic Associates Reading Course®,
except when such words are inherently required by the learning
process.
- Comprehension is measured by the Classroom Reading Inventory, by Nicholas J.
Silvertoli, for preschool through eighth-grade levels, and by the Advanced Reading Inventory, by
Jerry L. Johns, for seventh-grade through college levels. Other evaluative materials may also be utilized,
if desired.
- A
process of continual evaluation is built into each lesson to assure adequate familiarity with the rules and
real-life applications of reading.
- Teachers are certified as Reading Instruction Specialists by Academic Associates Learning
Centers® or its
licensees.
